“Our grandfather, Denis Heavrin, was a donor in 2001 (before we were born). Our grandmother, Nancy (Heavrin) Pike, was a tissue recipient. The biggest story we know about our Grandpa Denis is that he gave the gift of corneas so two young people could see again. It makes us proud to think that the man we never met is still out there in the world, helping people live better.
Years later, Nana could hardly walk because of back pain. She couldn’t do simple things she loved, like play with us or even take a walk without hurting. But thanks to the generosity of a tissue donor, Nana had surgery that changed everything. Today, she is the one chasing us around, and she even plays pickleball with us. Both sides of donation are written into our family’s story.”
